Firearms accidents in the home can result from an unauthorized individual, often a child, finding a loaded and unsecured firearm in the home. The risk of firearms-related unintentional injuries or deaths can be reduced when firearms owners are aware of and fully understand their responsibility to handle firearms safely and store them in a secure manner. The goal of Project Child Safe is to inform and educate all firearms owners on key safety issues and to provide firearms safety kits that include a gun locking device.
The Coburg Police Department has partnered with “Project Childsafe.” This is a nationwide effort to help ensure safe and responsible firearms ownership and storage. This program was developed by the national Shooting Sports Foundation and is supported by a U.S. Department of Justice grant.
The major component of this program is to provide, free of charge, gun locks to anyone that requests one. The locks are universal and will fit most handguns, rifles and shotguns.
If you would like a free gun lock(s), please stop by the front counter of the Police Department and an officer would be glad to assist you in their operation.
