D.A.R.E. was founded in the City of Los Angeles in 1983. It is an acronym meaning Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
While it's inception in the Coburg Community didn't begin in the 1980's, it is over a decade old partnership between the Eugene 4J School District , The City of Coburg and the Community.
Currently, one officer is assigned to teach the D.A.R.E. curriculum to the 5th grade students at Coburg Elementary School . Students in the class learn about the fundamentals of what drugs are, why they are abused and the negative health effects drugs have on our bodies. Students are also taught key life skills by learning to use the D.A.R.E. decision making model where students Define the problem, challenge or opportunity, Assess what their overall choices are, Respond and make a choice and finally Evaluate their decision. Learning to make healthy and wise decisions is not just important when it comes to using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, but is important in every day life.
Students also learn about which traits make up a good friend and which do not. Using their decision making model on a daily basis, students are given skills to resist negative peer and personal pressures that they encounter day in and day out.
All of this is just a fraction of what D.A.R.E. is to the City of Coburg. More importantly it serves as a network and partnership between the Police, youth and community members.
The D.A.R.E. program in Coburg is funded 100% on donations alone. Each year a D.A.R.E. auction is held during the Coburg Golden Years Celebration. Merchandise and services are donated to the program to be auctioned to the public in order to support the mission of D.A.R.E.
