The patrol function encompasses the most visible function of the Coburg Police Department. It is our first line of service to the citizens of Coburg , and as such, our most important asset. All other functions of the police department are designed to support the patrol function.
The Coburg Police Department patrols and responds to all calls for service within the City of Coburg .
Patrol officers are responsible for a variety of functions within the police department including; city patrol, emergency response to 911 calls, traffic enforcement and accident investigation, criminal investigations, service of search and arrest warrants, crime prevention, animal control and police K-9.
Protecting our city and its citizens from injury, danger or loss is the departments top priority. We strive to do this in a respectful manner, based on our Values. Each police officer is empowered to respond to the best of their ability to the problems of our citizens.
All of our officers have specialized training in different police disciplines that allow them to respond to most calls for service in an efficient and professional manner. A sample of these specialized areas include:
- Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection. The officer who possess this training and certification through the Oregon Department of Transportation may conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and in many cases, enforce laws that are only applicable to commercial vehicles. The Coburg Police Departments commercial motor vehicle inspector if Officer Eric Markell.
- Drug Recognition Expert. This certification allows the officer to conduct a systematic 12 step evaluation of a person who has been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. Based on the evidence collected during the evaluation, the DRE must form an opinion of the drug category that the person is under the influence of. This opinion is either confirmed, or not, by a toxicological examination conducted by the Oregon State Police. The Coburg Police Departments Drug Recognition Expert is Chief John Bosley.
Each of our officers is expected to conduct patrol. Our officers are intimately familiar with the City of Coburg so they can respond quickly and recognize when things are amiss. Patrol is a time tested and important part of crime suppression.
