Wastewater Recycling Project

Coburg is one of the last Oregon cities in the 1,000 population range that does not have a municipal sewer system. Add a daytime influx of 3,000 employees in various commercial and industrial facilities in town and over 200 RV visitor spaces in town and you will understand why replacing the the town's septic tanks with a wastewater collection and treatment system is Coburg's highest priority.

To accomplish this, the City has chosen to install a Septic Tank Effluent Pump (STEP) system to collect the the waste water and send it to a treatment plant through pressurized lines. At the plant, a Membrane Bio-reactor (MBR) system will treat the waste water before it is released back into the environment. This system will result in Class A effluent, the highest level possible in the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality's effluent rating system. Most of this effluent will be used for irrigation.

Coburg's system is modeled after an existing system in Yelm, Washington, a town of about 10,000 population. Check out the Water Reclamation PDF on that page.
